Jerry and Greg Yung of Battle Ground took off on their motorcycles earlier this month with the intention of reaching Portland, Maine, and circling back.

Greg, 25, recently returned from teaching English in Madrid. He’s riding a 2006 Suzuki Boulevard S83, which he calls a nice bike but nothing special. Not like his dad’s 2009 Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic Firefighter Edition.

Jerry, 53, a battalion chief for the Vancouver Fire Department, jokes that he’s working another year to finance what he calls his “retirement ride.” He’s close to completing his career, but wanted to take the motorcycle trip now, before his son enters the business world.

“We started this trip as a father-son thing, and then we decided it would be more fun if we had a purpose along the way,” Greg said. “We thought it would be great to go around the nation to spread good cheer and help out when we can.”

They collected donations from family and friends. Though an opportunity has yet to present itself, they are ready to buy a homeless person a meal or work on a Habitat for Humanity project as they wend their way across the United States.

“We’ve got a ways to go yet,” Jerry said.

Vancouver musician works on tour, tunes

It’s been a busy summer for Vancouver singer-songwriter Justin Klump.

The Mountain View High School graduate, 27, is currently working on new material. He isn’t working on an album, but rather plans to shop his tunes to radio stations, or sell them for use on television and film.

Fans wanting to hear the songs won’t be shut out though. The tracks will turn up on Klump’s website at http://justinklump.com.

“They’re more accessible,” he said. “They’re a little bit easier to sing along to.”

In addition to recording, Klump has been busy performing along the West Coast. He recently took the stage in Seattle and Los Angeles.

Klump also performed in July as part of the Terry Lee, Attorney Noon Concerts series in downtown Vancouver’s Esther Short Park.

“It was great,” he said. “I feel like we had a receptive and welcoming crowd.”

Even with the busy schedule, Klump said he isn’t planning on slowing down.

“It’s getting busy again, which is exciting, because it means there’s a lot going on,” he said. “I like to be busy.”
