Weather Eye: Dry spell continues; ready for 90 today?

We managed to make it through the weekend with only light sprinkles reported around Clark County and nothing measurable at the official rain bucket at Pearson Field. So, Monday was 52 days without measurable rainfall and today will be number 53. The next chance for a threat to break this long dry spell will be this weekend.

Yes, after a brief surge in warmth today and Wednesday, we once again tumble downward and stay that way probably until Labor Day, if one puts much faith in the extended forecast charts. So, another 90-degree day today, which would be number 10 for the year.

At least if the weather stays a little cloudy and cool that will make it easier perhaps for the kids going back to school soon. It is difficult keeping focus in the classroom when it is 90 degrees outside. I remember those days and with no air conditioning, thank you very much!

The average mean temperature so far this month in Vancouver is 69.4 degrees, 3.5 degrees above average. Temperature extremes range from 98 degrees on the 15th and 16th to 50 degrees on the 21st.

I was out for a walk Monday afternoon under the pleasant sunshine and temperatures hovering close to 80 degrees and noticed some activity in a nearby field. Upon close examination, I saw a steady stream of ants on a small ant trail carrying hordes of food on their backs. And this amidst the carefree grasshoppers jumping from blade to blade of grass. Yes, nature is busy getting ready for the onslaught of winter — or at least some of it is.

This reminds me of one of my favorite quotations by Henry Miller, “The moment one gives close attention to anything, even a blade of grass it becomes a mysterious, awesome, indescribably magnificent world in itself.”

Enjoy your week everyone!
