I am new to the Pacific Northwest, and I hear that the winters here are wonderful for gardeners. I grew up in the Midwest, where everything’s brown ugly when it is not covered in snow.

What can I buy now so that I have blooming plants in my new yard this winter?

Look for herbaceous plants that bloom in winter, which may include the smaller hardy cyclamens.

I have a Cyclamen cilicium, which has fragrant, dainty pink flowers. Its leaves are also strikingly variegated. At this point, the original tuber, once quarter-sized, has expanded to the size of a salad plate and is surrounded by seedlings.

They like a shady location and go dormant during the summer, disappearing completely.

To avoid damaging the tuber or disturbing the roots I carefully mark their location, so that I do not plant or step on that spot in warmer months.
