PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — U.S. marshals say they returned fire during an arrest Thursday in Portland and shot a man wanted on an attempted murder charge.

Portland police have identified the wounded man as 23-year-old Adam Berndt. They said he was in critical but stable condition Thursday evening at a local hospital.

The Marshals Service says the wounded man was the suspect in a shooting a day earlier in nearby Clark County, Wash. Marshals were assisting Vancouver, Wash., police in making the arrest when the shots were fired.

The victim in the Wednesday incident was identified as 29-year-old Steven L. McKnight, who was hospitalized in stable condition Thursday with four gunshot wounds.

Vancouver authorities had an arrest warrant for Berndt.
