WASHINGTON (AP) — Livan Hernandez has agreed to a one-year contract extension for the 2011 season with the Washington Nationals, giving the team some stability in a rotation that will be without Stephen Strasburg.

The deal the 35-year-old right-hander was announced after the Nationals beat St. Louis 4-2 Sunday. Terms were not disclosed.

With Strasburg expected to undergo Tommy John surgery this week to repair a torn ligament in his right elbow and miss the 2011 season, Washington general manager Mike Rizzo moved quickly to lock up Hernandez.

Washington reunited with the 1997 World Series MVP for a third time this spring, signing Hernandez on Feb. 24 to a minor league contract with a spring training invitation.

He is 9-9 with a 3.49 ERA in 27 starts this season, and 35-31 with a 4.27 in 94 career starts with the Nationals.
