NEW YORK (AP) — Former top-ranked player Ana Ivanovic advanced to the second round at the U.S. Open on Monday.
Ivanovic beat Ekaterina Makarova of Russia 6-3, 6-2.
The 2008 French Open champ from Serbia is unseeded and has fallen to 40th in the rankings. She didn’t face a break point Monday.
Makarova is ranked 52nd and won her first career title at Eastbourne this year.
