Test scores for Ore. students improve

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Oregon students are getting a little better at reading and arithmetic, but not writing.

Test scores released Monday show improvement for math, science and reading in nearly every public school subject and grade tested in Oregon.

The Oregonian reports the biggest gains were in math and in high school reading. In every grade tested, a record-high share of students passed the state math test.

But writing, already a weak spot for many Oregon students, did not improve overall because fewer sophomores passed the state writing test than in 2009.

Despite the improvement, nearly half of high school sophomores did not solve math problems or write essays well enough to meet state standards.
