FEDERAL WAY, Wash. (AP) — Police in Federal Way fatally wounded a man late Tuesday afternoon in a case that started with a stolen truck investigation.

Police spokeswoman Cathy Schrock says officers responding to a report of a stolen truck believed parked outside a Wal-Mart store saw a man leave the store, get into the truck and drive off. Officers tried to get the man to pull over but the driver refused to stop. Schrock says officers finally were able to cause the man to veer off a local street and crash into a fence.

When an officer approached the truck on foot, the spokeswoman says the truck driver aimed the vehicle at the officer, who opened fire.

A 23-year-old Tacoma man was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where he died Tuesday night.

The unidentified officer has been placed on administrative leave. The King County sheriff’s office is investigating.
