A Battle Ground man and wife were in the Clark County Jail on Wednesday night, hours after being arrested on suspicion of financially exploiting an 81-year-old woman and committing identity theft, police said.

Monty Cantrell, 50, was being held on $35,000 bail for alleged first-degree theft, a jail employee said.

Bridgett Cantrell, 41, was being held without bail for alleged second-degree theft, failing to report abuse, and being a fugitive from justice in Kentucky, based on warrants charging theft there.

Both are to appear in court this morning, the jail employee said.

More charges against the couple are likely and their daughters, 15 and 16, were placed in care of officials with Child Protective Services, according to a bulletin from the Battle Ground Police Department.

Police said the Cantrells befriended the woman and, over a period of two or three months, gained her trust to the extent that she went with them to “numerous” banks.

At the banks, the Cantrells allegedly opened accounts and obtained credit cards using her money. She also lives in Battle Ground.

In addition, police said, the Cantrells pressured the woman into selling a vehicle to them, but didn’t pay her.

Police as of Wednesday had not determined how much money the couple allegedly stole from the woman and said the investigation continues.
