PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — City inspectors in Portland, Ore., are taking a close look at the electrical and structural safety of popular food carts, as well as the decks, patios and rooftops that some cart owners have added.
City Commissioner Randy Leonard said Wednesday he put that item at the top of building inspectors’ priority list after touring a group of downtown food carts.
The carts are so popular in the Portland area that health inspectors say Multnomah County now has 583 of them.
The Oregonian says Leonard’s move was prompted by a KATU-TV report on some illegal additions. City officials say the trouble started when some cart owners began building decks for customers to eat on and roofs to protect them from the weather without getting proper permits.
