PORT ORCHARD, Wash. (AP) — A Defense Department police officer at Naval Base Kitsap has been charged with assaulting his girlfriend.
Kitsap County sheriff’s detectives say 48-year-old Dennis L. McCarthy pointed at gun at her in May and pushed her out the second-story window of a home in Olalla. He told deputies she fell while hanging drapes. She suffered a broken shoulder and broken leg bones.
The Kitsap Sun reports McCarthy was arrested Tuesday and charged Wednesday. A Navy spokesman says he’s been placed on leave.
At the time of the incident in May McCarthy was in a pretrial diversion program on a reckless burning charge from a 2008 fire that destroyed some of his girlfriend’s art supplies. He was a Port Orchard police sergeant at the time and resigned.
