Police converged in Camas late Wednesday night after being told that a man had flashed a knife at the Safeway there and fled with a pack of cigarettes.

The armed robbery was reported about 10:10 p.m. Wednesday. Officers with the Camas Police Department rushed to the scene, as did officers with the Washougal Police Department, Clark County Sheriff’s Office and Vancouver Police Department, Camas police Sgt. Rob Skeens said later.

Officers quickly took positions around the area, including nearby parks, and also watched for the man along nearby BNSF Railway tracks, according to emergency radio traffic monitored at The Columbian.

A Vancouver police tracking dog also was deployed to sniff out the man’s trail.

Skeens said he wasn’t sure what the man planned to accomplish in the robbery, but the man displayed a knife to a clerk at the gas pumps of the supermarket at 800 N.E. Third Ave. and fled with no money, just some cigarettes. No one was reported injured.

About midnight Wednesday, Skeens said officers had contacted people who were found in the general area. No one was in custody, but police detectives have been assigned to work the case and officers have leads they’ll follow up on to find the robber, Skeens said.
