WASHINGTON (AP) — Longtime New York Rep. Charles Rangel has told House colleagues he made “serious mistakes,” but he is pleading for leniency in punishment.

Standing and addressing the House, Rangel said Thursday he brought the situation on himself. He faces punishment for financial misdeeds, and the House ethics committee has recommended a formal censure.

Rangel apologized for putting the House in what he called “this awkward position.” The Democrat said he still believes the House has to be guided by fairness.

The ethics panel found Rangel guilty on 11 of 13 charges.
