Obama: Deficit panel dramatized need for decisions

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says the work of his budget commission underscores the need to make ‘difficult choices’ to curb the nation’s debt.

In a statement, Obama said he and his economic team will review the commission’s proposals in the coming weeks as the administration develops its budget for the coming year. The president says that while jobs and growth are the country’s most urgent needs, reducing the debt is the only way growth could be sustained in the medium to long-term.

The commission’s austere deficit-cutting plan failed to garner enough votes on the panel Friday to be advanced to Congress.

Obama said Democrats and Republicans would have to find common ground to tackle fiscal problems because the challenges are too great for one party to solve alone.
