SALEM, Ore. (AP) — The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is warning dog owners to be aware that it’s trapping season for furbearing animals and to take steps to make sure their pets aren’t caught in legally set traps.
Spokeswoman Michelle Dennehy suggests either keeping dogs on a leash or under the owner’s control — and in sight. She says lures and bait used by trappers can also be attractive to dogs. And she suggests learning where trapping may occur on public land and private land by permission. Most trapping seasons run from November to February.
Finally, the Wildlife Department suggests carrying wire cutters and a length of rope and knowing how to use them to free a pet from a trap.
Oregon has about 700 licensed trappers.
