George Mason uses 3s to beat UNC Wilmington 80-52

FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) — Isaiah Tate scored 16 points and George Mason knocked down 11 3-pointers to cruise to an 80-52 victory over North Carolina-Wilmington on Saturday night in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams.

The Patriots (6-2) broke open a 19-16 game in the first half with a 17-2 run that featured five straight possessions that ended in 3-point baskets, including three in a row from Vertrail Vaughns, who tallied a career-high 14 points.

George Mason was 7 of 11 from beyond the arc in the first half as it opened up a 21-point halftime lead on the Seahawks (3-4).

In the second half, the Patriots hit four more 3s to increase the lead to as many as 35 in winning their sixth straight over UNC Wilmington and fifth consecutive CAA opener.

The Seahawks were led by Donte Morales with eight points and 10 rebounds.
