Panel endorses 3 more Oregon marine reserves

NEWPORT, Ore. (AP) — Three proposed marine reserves off the Oregon Coast have cleared another hurdle.

The Oregon Ocean Policy Advisory Council on Tuesday in Newport endorsed recommendations to create reserves off Cape Falcon, Cascade Head and Cape Perpetua.

Under the terms of legislation enacted in 2009, they each include a core no-fishing zone surrounded by a wider area where bottom trawling and industrial development are limited. The idea is to preserve and scientifically study habitat refuges for marine life.

The last hurdle comes in the legislative session next year, when the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife seeks funding to regulate the reserves and conduct research.

If approved, this will bring to five the number of reserves in state waters within three miles of the coast.
