LONDON (AP) — Organizers say designated traffic routes for athletes, officials and sponsors are essential if the 2012 London Olympics are to avoid the transport problems that marred the 1996 Atlanta Games.

Some athletes and spectators struggled to get to events in Atlanta because of problems arising from the city’s overloaded transport network. The 1992 Olympics in Barcelona fared better with the extra traffic.

London’s Olympic Route Network scheme, which will include temporary games lanes, has been designed to ensure traffic disruption is kept to a minimum.

London organizing committee chairman Sebastian Coe told London Assembly lawmakers on Wednesday: “You have a choice — you can have this city remembered as a Barcelona or an Atlanta.”
