PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) — Washington State University says a 19-year-old male student has been hospitalized in Spokane with a possible case of bacterial meningitis. In a statement Wednesday, school health officials say they base that diagnosis on the presence of Neisseria meningitidis bacteria.

The unidentified student had been ill with flulike symptoms before he was hospitalized.

The school says there is an infection risk for students who have been in close contact with the resident of the Stephenson South Residence Hall. Whitman County Public Health officials and WSU’s Health and Wellness Service have notified those close to the affected student and recommended antibiotic treatment.

The school says just sharing dining halls or classrooms with the ill student is not considered close contact.

Symptoms usually involve high fever, headache and stiff neck. Other symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, discomfort looking into bright lights, confusion and sleepiness.
