Fifteen Vancouver firefighters stopped a kitchen fire in a home near East Fourth Plain Boulevard and Stapleton Road on Friday afternoon, but not before flames spread into the attic and caused heavy damage.

A witness reported the fire at 2:54 p.m. Friday, said Capt. Kevin Murray with the Vancouver Fire Department.

The home is at 2811 N.E. Stapleton Road, just down the street from the police west precinct station.

No injuries to humans were reported. The residents were not home at the time.

“Unfortunately, two dogs succumbed,” Murray said.

Damage to the house and its contents was estimated at $120,000.

Stapleton was blocked north of Fourth Plain to state Highway 500, Murray said.

County records show the home is a single-story wooden house built in 1950. It is owned by Kevin and Voni Keith.

The fire started in the kitchen area, but the exact cause hadn’t been determined as of Friday night and remained under investigation.
