No. 22 Maryland cruises past UMBC 71-45

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — Tianna Hawkins scored 16 points in her first start of the season and No. 22 Maryland coasted past Maryland-Baltimore County 71-45 Friday night for its eighth straight victory.

The Terrapins (9-1) scored the game’s first 15 points, led 40-16 at halftime and 61-35 with 7 minutes left. Maryland is 10-0 in the crosstown series that began in 1987.

Hawkins, a 6-foot-3 sophomore, went 7 for 10 from the floor, made both her free throws and grabbed five rebounds. She earned a starting spot after scoring 17 points in 18 minutes during Maryland’s previous game, against Loyola (Md.).

Anjale Barrett had 12 points and Alyssa Thomas added 10 for the Terrapins.

Erin Brown scored 14 and Tope’ Obajolu had 10 points for UMBC (4-6).
