KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals confirmed Friday they have agreed to a one-year contract with outfielder Melky Cabrera if he passes a physical exam.

A person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press Thursday that the deal was for one year at $1.25 million and included performance bonuses. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the agreement had not been made final.

The 26-year-old Cabrera is a switch-hitting outfielder who spent eight seasons in the New York Yankees organization and played the 2010 season with Atlanta. He played mostly in center field.

He hit .255 in 147 games for the Braves last season with four home runs and 42 RBIs.

Since breaking in with the Yankees in 2005, he’s a career .267 hitter with 40 homers and 270 RBIs in 716 major league games.
