Serg Ovchinnikov scored 28 points Friday, leading the way as Battle Ground opened league play in the Class 4A Greater St. Helens League with a 73-64 boys basketball victory at Evergreen.

Seth Belknap added 19 points for the Tigers, who took control of the game in the first half with their assertive play and led by double digits most of the second half.

Ovchinnikov scored in a variety of ways. The 6-foot-1 junior guard got to the rim, hit four 3-point shots, and made 10 of 13 foul shots.

“They were the more aggressive team,” Evergreen coach Kelly Blankenship said.

Caleb Dressler scored 22 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked four shots for the Plainsmen.

Evergreen played without Warren Edmondson, who is expected back next week according to Blankenship.

At Heritage 52, Skyview 45 — Tim Hergert led Heritage with 21 points, including the first eight points of the game, as the Timberwolves opened league play with a win.

Skyview was charged with a technical foul for grabbing the rim during warmups, and Hergert converted two free throws to start the game. Then he buried back-to-back 3-pointers to give Heritage an early 8-0 advantage.

Hergert finished with four 3-pointers in the game. He was the only Heritage player in double figures.

Austin Bonds led Skyview with 15 points.

Skyview 58, Heritage 32 — Larissa Hamilton scored 19 points as the host Storm opened league play with a decisive win. Skyview outscored Heritage in each quarter, and pulled away after leading by 11 at halftime.

Aubrey Ward-El scored 13 points for the Storm, and Delaney Keser 11.

Emily Myers had 10 points to lead Heritage.

Mountain View 47, Union 22 — Emma DuChesne scored 12 of her 15 points in the third quarter as the Thunder (2-1) got coach Kevin Estes his 400th career victory.

“I was more pleased with the way we played defense tonight,” said Estes, who didn’t tell his team of the milestone until after the game.

Estes said his first high school coaching victory came in 1983, and No. 300 was in 2000.
