Try This: Season’s splendors abound in Clark County

Fort Vancouver and the Pearson Air Museum are hosting holiday events today.

Visitors can see what Fort Vancouver looked like during the holiday season in the 1840s. The fort will be decorated, and several living history activities will be offered.

Activities include cooking and hot cider in the kitchen, Christmas carols, children’s activities and demonstrations in the blacksmith shop.

Over at the Pearson Air Museum, visitors can climb into the cockpit of a vintage airplane and have their photos taken with Santa Claus. Children can also write letters to Santa Claus. Refreshments will be served.

When: Fort Vancouver: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today.

These holiday events are just the start of the seasonal activities in Clark County. Others include a local group’s dance production, the Christmas Ship Parade and a performance of “A Christmas Carol Times Two.”

1. Performers team up for spin on ‘Christmas Carol’

Pianist and composer Michael Allen Harrison teams up with actor Al LePage for “A Christmas Carol Times Two!” LePage will portray all 18 characters from Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.”

LePage will assume the role of Englishman Thomas Hutchinson to tell the story, and Harrison will set the tone for dramatic reading portions with musical selections.

All proceeds will benefit the Vancouver School of Arts and Academics Parent Teacher Student Association and the Snowman Foundation, which brings music to children.

When: 2-3:30 p.m. Sunday.

2. Dance company presents original holiday tale

Dance Fusion NW presents “Christmas Stories,” an original tale of a young mother and her daughter celebrating Christmas Eve in the midst of financial struggles.

The theatrical performance incorporates tap, jazz and contemporary dance styles and features music by Harry Connick Jr., Sting and Amos Lee.

When: 2:30 and 6:30 p.m. today, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

3. Christmas Ship Parade lights up

The Christmas Ship Parade began in earnest this week and continues through Dec. 21. About 20 to 30 ships adorned with holiday decorations and lights will sail along the Columbia and Willamette rivers each night.

Information on routes is available online. Exact information on where ships will be and at what time along the planned route isn’t available, however, because river debris, weather and rough water could cause cancellation or delays. Commercial traffic on the rivers can alter routes.

When: Nightly through Dec. 21. Depending on the date and route, nightly parades begin between 5 and 7 p.m.

Where: On the Columbia and Willamette rivers.

4. Latest ‘Narnia’ adventure arrives in theaters

“The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” is now in theaters.

In the film, Lucy (Georgie Henley), Edmund (Skandar Keynes) and their cousin Eustace (Will Poulter) return to Narnia to join Caspian (Ben Barnes) on a voyage.

The group encounters dragons and warriors along the way.

The film is rated PG. It will be shown in 3-D at Battle Ground Cinema, Cinetopia and all Clark County Regal Cinemas locations that show first-run movies.
