Railroad crews cleaning slides in W. Washington

SEATTLE (AP) — Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Amtrak crews are working Sunday to clean up numerous slides along railroad tracks throughout Western Washington.

BNSF spokesman Gus Melonas says Amtrak service has been halted in the area for two days as a precaution. No trains have been hit by slides and freight trains are still running. But mud and rock slides caused by the heavy rains have forced some brief track closures. Melonas says none of the tracks or roadbeds appear to be damaged.

The line from Everett to Wenatchee is closed by the same slide that blocked U.S. 2 near Skykomish, but Melonas says crews should have that open by early afternoon.

A track just north of the tunnel that runs under downtown Seattle was blocked for about a half hour by a small slide.
