MOUNT VERNON, Wash. (AP) — Mount Vernon, Wash., police say rescue workers have suspended a search for a homeless man who had been reported stuck in a tree surrounded by Skagit River waters.

Lt. Chris Cammock says Monday’s search included a Snohomish County sheriff’s helicopter, which has technology to look for body heat.

Police say another transient called about 2 p.m. Monday to report that his friend was stuck in a tree surrounded by water in Edgewater Park in Mount Vernon. The other man waded to safety.

Deputies searched the area and don’t believe the man is still there. Cammock says he might have found a way down the tree and out of the water.
