CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Charlotte coach Alan Major has dismissed top scorer Shamari Spears from the team, a little over two weeks after he was suspended for the third time in two seasons for violating unspecified rules.

The first-year coach shed little light on the decision in a school news release on Tuesday, other than to say it came after “much consideration.” Spears was averaging 17 points and 3.2 rebounds.

The 6-foot-6 senior forward was benched in the second half of Charlotte’s loss at Oregon State on Nov. 24 and posted on Twitter after the game that he was contemplating quitting the team. Major suspended him indefinitely before the 49ers’ next game.

The Salisbury, N.C., native transferred to Charlotte after playing his freshman season at Boston College.
