CHICAGO (AP) — Former White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel has endured hours of questioning at a hearing over residency challenges to his Chicago mayoral bid.

Emanuel testified for nearly 12 hours Tuesday before a Chicago election board official. He has finished, but the hearing will resume Wednesday afternoon.

More than two dozen objectors contend Emanuel isn’t eligible to run for mayor on the Feb. 22 ballot because he lived for nearly two years in Washington working for President Barack Obama.

Emanuel and his lawyers contend he didn’t forfeit his Chicago residency by going to work in Washington.

Emanuel has spent hours on the hot seat answering questions from lawyers and a cadre of regular Chicagoans who have formally objected to his candidacy to replace the retiring Mayor Richard Daley.
