EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Eugene police have shot and seriously wounded a 27-year-old man they say opened fire in a Valley River Mall parking area, hitting at least one vehicle.

Police spokeswoman Melinda McLaughlin said neither mall shoppers nor police were injured Wednesday.

She says the unidentified suspect has been hospitalized with what she described as critical injuries. Two officers who fired at him have been placed on paid administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.

Officers responding to a report of multiple shots fired in the mall parking area were provided with a name and vehicle description for the shooter. They soon got calls about a reckless driver matching that vehicle description. McLaughlin says officers located the vehicle and tried to negotiate, but the driver’s body and hands were in constant motion inside the car and he didn’t respond to officers’ instructions.

A handgun was recovered.
