EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan State began the season expecting two or three players to split time at running back.

Then Edwin Baker emerged as one of the Big Ten’s most dangerous offensive players.

Baker has been in a class by himself for the seventh-ranked Spartans, rushing for 1,187 yards and 13 touchdowns. He’s become the team’s top tailback, with Le’Veon Bell and Larry Caper settling into supporting roles.

On a team known for not having many stars, Baker stands out because of his ability to score from anywhere on the field. His 56-yard touchdown helped jump-start the offense against Notre Dame, and his 61-yard scoring run against Michigan was another memorable play.

The Spartans take on 15th-ranked Alabama in the Capital One Bowl.
