VAL GARDENA, Italy (AP) — Michael Walchhofer has provisionally won a World Cup super-G race, extending Austria’s strong start to the Alpine season.
Walchhofer finished in 1 minute, 34.35 seconds, 0.67 faster than second-placed Stephan Keppler of Germany with some lower-ranked skiers still to race.
Bode Miller lost time early in his run and was 16th on the course in Val Gardena, Italy.
Defending World Cup super-G champion Erik Guay of Canada was third.
Walchhofer was poised to lead the overall World Cup standings after morning leader Aksel Lund Svindal crashed out. The Norwegian was unhurt.
