HAINES CITY, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say the mother of University of Miami sophomore running back Mike James has died in a central Florida vehicle crash.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office says James’ sister, 25-year-old Jasmine James Ansley, was driving a Ford Explorer Monday morning when a Toyota Corolla hit her at an intersection. Deputies say 47-year-old Elgusta James was not wearing a seat belt. She was ejected from the front passenger seat and pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials say Ansley’s 5-year-old son Jayden was also not wearing a seat belt and ejected from the back seat. He was taken by helicopter to a hospital in serious but stable condition. Ansley was in a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

According to the Hurricanes’ website, James has left to be with his family.
