2 states probe use of models to lure marrow donors

BOSTON (AP) — Authorities in New Hampshire and Massachusetts are investigating a lab that used models wearing high heels and short skirts to recruit donors for a bone marrow registry.

They’re looking into why the lab billed insurance companies more than $4,000 for DNA tests that were supposed to cost about $100 and whether the workers took samples from people who didn’t qualify because of age or medical issues.

Jim Boffetti of the New Hampshire attorney general’s office says UMass Memorial Health Care Inc. may have spent as much as $4 million on the models over the past 18 months.

Boffetti says there’s nothing wrong with using models to get people to sign up for the registry, but the lab should be properly advising potential bone marrow donors and shouldn’t be overcharging insurance companies.
