OGDEN, Utah (AP) — Jimmer Fredette scored 28 points, including a pair of free throws down the stretch and the No. 23 BYU Cougars held off Weber State 72-66 on Tuesday night.

BYU, which bounced back from an 86-79 loss to UCLA on Saturday, improved to 11-1. The Wildcats fell to 6-5.

The game was supposed to be a matchup of marquee point guards, with two NBA scouts on hand to watch Fredette and Weber State star Damian Lillard. But Lillard, who was leading the Big Sky Conference in scoring at 21.5 points a game, suffered a season-ending foot injury last week and is scheduled to undergo surgery on Sunday.

Still, the Wildcats refused to give in.

After trailing by 17 points in the second half, the Wildcats pulled within 67-63 on Scott Bamforth’s 3-pointer with 2:30 to play.
