Vancouver police were looking for one or more burglars who broke into Marshall Community Center’s teen lounge area, called SPOT, and stole equipment worth more than $4,000 that kids use for recreation on winter break.

“We’re right at the point where that equipment would be useful,” said Pete Mayer, director of Vancouver-Clark Parks and Recreation.

Officials discovered Tuesday morning that someone had broken a main glass entry door and another into the teen center. SPOT stands for Safe Positive Outlet for Teens.

Mayer said Vancouver police asked him to not specify what equipment was stolen as they investigate the case. The $4,000 estimate of the worth of the stolen equipment doesn’t include the cost of replacing the doors.

Teens play pool and other games in the center as part of winter-break day camps, which include open time, structured activities and field trips, and they still can despite the break-in.

“I have no doubt our staff will give the teens in winter-break day camp a fun time, despite this disheartening setback,” Mayer said in a bulletin. “But it will be a challenge, especially in this time of budget cuts.”

Officials are taking steps to increase security at Marshall, he said. Anyone with information about the break-in is asked to call 911.

Marshall is at 1009 E. McLoughlin Blvd., not far from Clark College.
