PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Figures from the 2010 Census show that much of Oregon’s 12-percent population increase came in the first half of the last decade.
The state demographer, Kanhaiya (kuhn-AY-yuh) Vaidya (vy-duh), tells The Oregonian newspaper that if the population growth had continued in recent years and the state had added about 42,000 people more, Oregon would have gotten a sixth congressional seat.
The state’s population rose by nearly 410,000 people from the 2000 Census and now totals 3.8 million.
Oregon was the 28th most populous state in 2000 and is not the 27th.
