Snowshoe trips set this winter

Six snowshoe outings in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest will be offered this winter by the Mount St. Helens Institute.

The trips cost $15 per person and space is limited. Volunteers or institute staff will the outings.

The schedule includes: Jan. 9, Trail of Two Forests and Ape Cave (Mount St. Helens); Jan. 30, McClellan Loop (Wind River); Feb. 13, June Lake (Mount St. Helens); Feb. 27, Koshko loop (Wind River); March 13, Marble Mountain to Chocolate Falls (Mount St. Helens) and March 27, Old Man Pass loop (Mount St. Helens).

Dates announced for sports show

PORTLAND — The 36th annual Pacific Northwest Sportsmen’s Show will be Feb. 9-13 at the Portland Expo Center, 2060 N. Marine Drive.

Hundreds of displays by outdoor retailers, guides, resorts and others are featured each year.

Show hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Feb. 9-11, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Feb. 12, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Feb. 13.

Admission will cost $12 cash or $13 credit for adults. Juniors ages 6 to 16 will pay $5. Parking at the Expo Center is $8, while parking at Portland Meadows or Portland International Raceway will cost $6 and includes a shuttle to the show.

Grants available for projects

OLYMPIA — Applications are being accept until Feb. 28 for state grants to benefit fish and wildlife.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife expects to have about $1 million available from the Aquatic Land Enhancement Account to reimburse organizations and individuals to conduct volunteer projects.

The five major types of projects are habitat, research, education-outreach, facility development and artificial production. Grants may not be used for salaries, wages or stipends.

Eligible applicants include individuals, non-profit organizations, tribes, cities, counties, schools, university and public utility districts.

Application materials are available for download from the agency’s web site at http://wdfw.wa.gov/grants/alea/index.html.

Program coordinator Josh Nicholas said the grant program is highly competitive.

Oregon moves Deschutes sheep

THE DALLES — Twenty bighorn sheep have been captured from near the lower Deschutes River and 40 from the John Day River for transplant elsewhere in Oregon and in Wyoming.

Twenty sheep were released at Cottonwood Canyon State Park, scheduled to open in 2013. Twenty more were to federal Bureau of Land Management property at Branson Creek near the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument.

The final 20 sheep went to the Seminoe Mountains in Wyoming.

Nordic ski clothing to be discussed

PORTLAND — A free program on cross-country skiing gear and clothing will begin at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 4 at the monthly meeting of the Portland chapter of the Oregon Nordic Club.

The group meets at Multnomah Arts Center, 7688 S.W. Capitol Highway.

Jeremy Rooper of The Mountain Shop will discuss gear for all levels of skiers.
