PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A former Milwaukie, Oregon, high school student body president who was deported to Mexico has been welcomed home by his family in time for Christmas.

The Oregonian say 20-year-old Hector Lopez arrived at Portland International Airport on Christmas Eve.

Lopez was a baby when his family came to the United States. He says the family hired a lawyer to obtain immigration papers, but that was never done. He grew up in Milwaukie and was student body president at Putnam High.

On Aug. 23, Lopez and his father were arrested and deported to Mexico. But Hector Lopez fled to the U.S. border last month to seek asylum. He was held at a detention facility in Arizona before authorities ruled last week that he could be released before his case is heard in January.
