Abortion issues splits Oregon charities

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Catholic Community Services of Lane County will stop accepting money from United Way because the organization gives money to Planned Parenthood of Southwest Oregon.

The Register-Guard reports that this summer, the United Way gave $71,000 to Catholic Community Services. That’s about 4 percent of the Catholic charity’s total budget.

The money was supposed to provide shelter and permanent housing to homeless families and food, prescription medication and utilities assistance to low-income residents.

United Way spokesman Chris Pryor says the Catholic charity made its decision known two weeks ago.

The charity objects to Planned Parenthood’s use of the abortion pill, RU-486, which some church leaders regard as the moral equivalent of surgical abortion.

Pryor says the United Way will seek a replacement agency by Feb. 1.
