PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — An anonymous phone call reporting a bomb in the Multnomah County Courthouse in Portland prompted authorities to evacuate the building Tuesday. A bomb squad determined that a suspicious-looking device was an old phone junction box that could have been in the building more than 50 years.

Multnomah County sheriff’s spokeswoman Lt. Mary Lindstrand says the box was found behind a bench in the last row of a courtroom. She says investigators don’t know who put the box there or when. It was leaning against a wall.

The Oregonian says the box had wires and bomb experts took their time with it.

The call received at 1:13 p.m. did not say exactly where the device was. Deputies found the box about a half hour later and evacuated the building by 2 p.m. It took the bomb squad about an hour to determine the box was not a threat.
