MILWAUKEE (AP) — A Wisconsin man whose one-liner won a liars’ club contest says he had no idea the same line had been used for years.

The Burlington Liars Club announced this line Wednesday as its top lie of the year: “I almost had a psychic girlfriend but she left me before we met.”

The man who submitted it was 49-year David Milz of Bristol. He says he came up with it over the summer while joking around with colleagues.

However, the line has been used before. An online search turns up numerous instances attributing the line to comedian Steven Wright.

Milz says he came up with it completely on his own.

A club official says he’s not concerned whether the line was used before, and Milz is still the winner.
