Viney guides Loyola Marymount past UC Irvine 87-80

IRVINE, Calif. (AP) — Drew Viney’s double-double led hot-shooting Loyola Marymount to an 87-80 nonconference victory over UC Irvine on Thursday night.

Viney scored 22 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for the Lions (7-7), who made 55.6 percent of their shots (30 of 54).

Vernon Teel added 20 points for the Lions, who snapped a two-game losing streak as they played their first game in eight days. Anthony Ireland scored 15, Larry Davis 11 and Tim Diederichs 10.

Eric Wise had 23 points to pace the Anteaters (6-8), who lost their fourth in a row.

Darren Moore scored 21 for UC Irvine, and Mike Wilder had 12.

Loyola Marymount dominated inside with a 37-28 rebounding margin and a 38-18 advantage on points in the paint.

The Lions led 42-34 at the break and went up by 19 early in the second half.
