BEND, Ore. (AP) — New Year’s Eve brought a chilly swim — and a fortunate rescue — for a dog named Bob Dole who fell through thin ice on a Bend, Ore., pond.

Battalion Chief Dave Howe says Bend firefighters responded Friday to reports of a dog on the ice on Mirror Pond. They got there in time to see the dog walk around, then fall through the ice.

Tethered to other firefighters on shore, Trampas Mayer donned a dry suit, slid across the ice and rescued the dog.

Bob Dole was reunited with his owner Kristen Fish on Friday afternoon.

She says she’d just gotten the black and white dog when he escaped Thursday night. She expressed her thanks to the people who saved him.

KTVZ says Bob suffered a few cuts from the ice and was treated for hypothermia.
