Business names: Bader Winery and Bader Beer & Wine Supply.

Owner: Steve Bader.

Address: 711 Grand Blvd.

What the business does: Bader Winery makes wine at the store for individual bottle sales to consumers. The operation also helps people make 30 bottle batches of wine at the store using our equipment and grape juice. We also provide the temperature-controlled space for the wine to be made any time of the year. Bader Beer & Wine Supply is a hobby shop that sells equipment and ingredients for people to make beer and wine at home. Bader also offers classes on beer and winemaking, and follow-up support for beer and winemakers, helping them formulate recipes.

How has the economy affected your business: The recession did not affect the business to any great degree, which has continued to grow about 10 percent to 15 percent the past 15 years. Making your own beer and wine is more economical than purchasing it from breweries and wineries.

Greatest challenge: Marketing the business to potential consumers and building a Web presence. The company also sends out electronic newsletters, writes for trade magazines and teaches a variety of classes.

What’s ahead: An increased presence on social-networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, making a presentation at the Winemaker magazine annual conference, which is at Skamania Lodge this year.
