PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The state Employment Department reports that initial claims for unemployment insurance benefits fell by 1,300 the week ending Jan. 23.

There were 11,174 initial claims, down from 12,479 the week before.

January is typically the busiest month for employment insurance claims.

More than 215,000 Oregonians are receiving unemployment benefits — up from 145,000 during the same week in 2009.

Total dollars paid out in benefits topped $64 million, compared with $39 million the same week last year.
