Blazers’ Roy out through All-Star break

No timetable set for return

PORTLAND — The future is unknown for Trail Blazers guard Brandon Roy and his strained right hamstring.

Roy will miss Portland’s next two games and will neither play nor participate in the NBA All-Star game, which is scheduled Feb. 14 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Tex.

After going back and forth for more than three weeks about when Roy would return to the lineup, a decision was made Saturday afternoon to keep the three-time All-Star under wraps until at least a Feb. 16 matchup against the Los Angeles Clippers.

However, an official timetable for Roy’s activation has not been determined.

“It’s tough. I haven’t been this down in a long time,” said Roy, during a press conference Saturday at the Rose Garden prior to Portland’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Roy leads the team in average points (23.1) and minutes (38.3), and ranks second in assists (5.0) and steals (1.0).

But the former Washington standout has missed 12 of the Blazers’ last 13 games and 10 consecutive contests.

He initially injured his hamstring Jan. 13 against Milwaukee, then aggravated it Jan. 20 at Philadelphia.

Roy underwent a platelet-rich plasma infusion Jan. 22. The state-of-the-art medical procedure injected his blood directly into the injured hamstring, in the attempt to serve as a catalyst for healing while shortening rehabilitation time.

But progress has been slow, and Roy felt his hamstring tighten up again Friday during practice.

An announcement by the team that Roy would undergo another PRP treatment next Monday was later refuted by Roy. He said he plans to do as little as possible during his downtime, and rely on ice and rest to aid the healing process.

“This was not a decision that any of us wanted to make,” Blazers General Manager Kevin Pritchard said. “But in the end, we had to do what was best for Brandon.”

The decision to rest Roy was yet another setback for the Blazers, who have dealt with an uncanny series of key injuries this season.

However, Portland still remains in the Western Conference playoff chase. And coach Nate McMillan said his team has no choice but to carry on while Roy is out.

“We’ve just got to try and stay in this race,” McMillan said. “And when he gets back, hopefully he is rested and he has an All-Star second half of the season. This thing is going to be tight.”
