Unique art, prom for all among diverse options

The latest exhibit at downtown Vancouver’s Aurora Gallery spotlights mixed-media paintings by Barbara Kaempf Matkowski. But Matkowski takes her paintings one step further by embellishing them with metal, fabric and photography in a contemporary abstract style.
Art fans can also check out handmade jewelry by Pat La Croix.

The exhibit is just one of several weekend entertainment options in Clark County and Portland. Others include a theater production that evokes the 1980s, lantern tours at Fort Vancouver and the latest production from Portland Opera.
Like, totally ‘Awesome’
It’s safe again to rock the mullet hairstyle, leg warmers and neon clothes — for at least one night, anyway. The latest theater production from Washougal High School is “The Awesome ’80s Prom.” The audience is invited to participate in the production.
Audience members can dance to ’80s classics, mingle, vote for Prom King and Queen, play air guitar or sip punch and watch the show. Scenes take place throughout the auditorium.

Lanterns light the way
Visitors can tour Fort Vancouver after dark with the help of a lantern. Each adult attending the tour can carry a lantern and tour with a park ranger through the counting house, fur store, kitchen, chief factor’s house and the bake house. Visitors will learn about what activities took place after dark at the fort and what it was like to live by lantern light. Following the tour, visitors can enjoy a cup of cider and ask questions about the fort.

Portland Opera production explores love, fidelity
Portland Opera’s latest production, “Così fan tutte,” opens this weekend.
In the production, Ferrando and Guglielmo tout the virtues of the women they are set to marry when another man wagers that the women’s faithfulness wouldn’t last more than a day if the men were gone. The two men disguise themselves and try to woo each other’s fiancée. What begins as a lighthearted deception ends on a bittersweet note.

Folk musicians take the stage for Winterfolk
The annual Winterfolk concert in Portland brings together a variety of folk musicians and groups in a fundraiser for Portland’s Sisters of the Road Café. Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary will headline the show. He has written a variety of popular folk tunes, including “Puff, the Magic Dragon,” and has devoted his music to themes such as social justice.
Other musicians appearing on the bill include Brian Cutean, the Artichoke Music All-Stars and the Tom May Trio.
Tom May, a Battle Ground folk musician, has hosted a popular radio show, “River City Folk,” for more than 24 years.
