A 90-year-old woman safely escaped a fire that broke out inside her east Vancouver home, just off state Highway 500, early this morning.

The fire started inside her home at 4607 N.E. 38th St., as she was lighting a fire in her fireplace and sparks ignited a nearby cardboard box, said Vancouver firefighter-spokesman Chris Moen.

She alerted a neighbor, who then called 911.

“She was able to exit and neighbors came over and got her over to their house,” Moen said.

Minutes later, firefighters responded to the 6 a.m. fire. Flames were seen coming from the front window, and the blaze was creeping into the attic.

It was brought under control 15 minutes later, but Moen said the structure is a total loss.

Damage was estimated at $175,000.
