EVERETT, Wash. (AP) — An Everett family is upset after learning a local animal shelter euthanized their family cat after the pet wandered into an Everett police department parking lot and was captured.

Everett police spokesman Sgt. Robert Goetz (getz) says the department has had problems with cats wandering into the parking lots and soiling police motorcycles. Goetz says he personally has seen at least five cats.

But a teary-eyed Amy Skaar told KING5-TV that it’s upsetting her cat died alone. The family lives next to the police department’s South Precinct building. She says two of her cats disappeared about two weeks ago. The family put up missing pet ads, then got a call from the animal shelter, which said one of the cats had been euthanized.

Shelter spokeswoman Kate Reardon says the cat didn’t have a collar or an ID chip and a veterinarian deemed the 15-year-old cat too ill to be adopted.
