Driver injured after exiting moving car

A 21-year-old motorist was taken to a hospital Monday after she exited the driver’s seat of her car, apparently without making sure the car was in park, and the car kept moving.

The unusual accident happened about 4:45 p.m. Monday in the 2700 block of Northeast 127th Avenue, in the Burton area, said Capt. Bill Garlington with the Vancouver Fire Department.

Garlington said the woman got out of the car, hoping to coax her dog inside, and apparently failed to put the transmission in park or otherwise make sure the car would stay stopped. When the car kept moving, she stumbled and was injured by the car, Garlington said.

En route to the hospital, medics called a trauma alert, notifying hospital emergency room staff to be ready, Garlington said.

The driver is Samantha Gardner of Vancouver, said Officer Ilia Botvinnik with the Vancouver Police Department.

Monday night, Gardner was in the emergency department at Southwest Washington Medical Center, said a nursing supervisor. Pending results of X-rays and scans, her condition hadn’t been determined.
